I'll Accept My Gift Early, But I'd Like Icing On My Cake

The A's do not like my birthday.

For many years now, I actually thought they just didn't like me, but that was before they finally won a clinching game at home, while I was jumping up and down in the stands, screaming my lungs out and hugging random strangers. As the Coliseum melded into one voice to the tune of the chilling "Marco" "Scutaro" chant, I was sure that was going to be the highlight of the decade, but of course, Marco delivered...and it just kept getting better and better. "Pandemonium at the Coliseum" indeed. So, yes, the A's do love me; I guess I was just born on the wrong day.

My birthday is October 14th. For those of you who are not so attached to the date, just let me sum up by saying that the A's ruined both my 16th and 25th birthdays--the only two birthdays in the last sixteen years that they were still playing, and when I say that they had bad games on my birthday, I'm understating the truth. It's been horrible.

This year is my 30th, and I decided to do something extra-special, something the A's couldn't ruin, so I contacted a travel agent in January and booked a weekend cruise to Mexico with assorted family and friends. As I was signing the papers, I said to my friend, "Well, this pretty much guarantees the A's a trip to the ALCS." Lo and behold, ten months later, here we are. I was not at all surprised at these turn of events, because of course the A's would find a way to play when I physically couldn't be there.

But despite knowing I was going to miss the second round of playoffs, my excitement was still palpable on Friday night. I was content with the fact that I got to see the A's clinch the first round, and I was resigned to watch the A's/Yankees from the cruise ship, while pretending I was at the Coliseum.

But then...something wonderful and unexpected happened; something that I hadn't even considered: Detroit won the second game, and forced everyone to look at postseason possibilities minus the Yankees, which of course, meant that our home games were not on the weekend I was out of town. And as quickly as I started to consider the consequences of a Detroit win, they actually did win the series and our opponent was set.

I was listening to KNBR (don't judge!) on the way back to L.A. last night, and forgive me for not knowing the source, but they read an email over the air from a Detroit fan, and it went something like this:

The Yankees are like the perfect rich couple that everyone knows. They have a lot of money, they take lots of trips, and they want for nothing. Their life, on the surface, is perfect. It isn't until you go deeper that you realize that their marriage is a sham, and is entirely without joy.

In contrast, Detroit is the couple that has been married for a while, where nothing has come easily to them. They have gone through ups and downs; highs and lows, but they find that in the end, they have gone through it together, as a team, and when they finally succeed at something, the joy they experience is unparalleled.

I have a feeling that even if the Yankees would have won the World Series, their team--and their fans--could not have experienced even a fraction of the joy that took place in the ballpark in Detroit tonight. For Detroit, it was all about the unadulterated pure joy of winning a baseball game; for the Yankees, it simply was another day on the job.

There's something to that analogy. For instance, I despise Kenny Rogers with every fiber of my being, but I stood up and applauded his pitching performance on Friday, choked up with him during his press conference, and felt myself tear up at the joy I felt from watching a baseball team celebrate a clinching victory with its fans.

Let the Yankees have ESPN and the biased commentators, who, no doubt, are scrambling for intelligent analysis on a series between two teams they've largely ignored. They can show Derek Jeter golfing to their hearts content. I'll be watching Detroit/Oakland; two teams who haven't been dancing this long in October in more than a decade; two teams who promise pitching duels, instead of slug-fests; two teams who exude pure, unabashed love for the game, and two teams who have cities full of fans asking nothing more than good October baseball.

Detroit vs. Oakland. Good for ball. A treat for fans. And the perfect birthday present for a baseballgirl.

it's sure to be a great birthday this year, BBG!
:)

...you're 30?!

You are absolutely right
This will be one of the least watched penants in the last few years.  Too few big names,m two small markets.  But again as in every post season this century has shown us, the team with the best TEAM makes it the furthest.  Oakland versus Detroit is a game for fans, real fans.  Fans that endured the uncertainty of June and July, the anticipation of August, and the second guessing of September.  Not the fans that show up at the end of september when the assurance of a post season appearance is assured. I had wanted to meet the Yankees next week, becuase I am confident we would have destroyed them but looking at it now I think I will enjoy this series because the BASEBALL is certain to be better.

Nice read BBG
I couldn't agree more. This is a great thing for baseball and hopefully the rest of the country will realize it as they watch. Happy Birthday!

Thank you
for taking the cruise and making sure the A's made the ALCS.  I think this is going to be a great series that will be a lot of fun, and considering the Tiger offense/bullpen troubles I do like the A's chances

yankees
look i hate the yankees as much as anyone else.  the big money contracts, the allstar team lineup, the ability to make huge financial mistakes and have it not handcufff the team.

BUT....does anyone else think Detroit was a little too excited about beating them?  I mean the Yankees may have been picked  by a lot of "experts" but outside of their lineup were they really the best team out there?  They remind me of the old Cleveland Indians model where they just wanted to outslug you.

that being said Detroit was celebrating like they just won it all.  Spraying champagne in the crowd, lifting leyland on their shoulders.  I'm surprised by that considering how Leyland is so old school.  You would think he would have them celebrating as if they were EXPECTING to beat them.  I mean the Yankees have been bounced out of the playoffs by somebody else for a few years now.  If they are happy with just beating the Yankees then thats fine.

Oakland was happy to beat the twins but they seem to have their eyes on the prize.  Chavy said that if the post season run ends now it would hurt worse then any of the other exits.  In contrast it seems the Tigers are content with simply having beaten an overhyped team that has a great lineup.

that and kenny rogers is a punk

From one monkey to the next
The A's got their ALDS monkey off their back on Friday.

This week they'll get another monkey (or should I say ape?) off their back by destroying Kenny Rogers A's-killer rep.

by As Exile in Atlanta on Oct 8, 2006 6:23 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Why shouldn't Detroit celebrate?
Only a couple of years ago they nearly set a record for losses in a season. Guys like Brandon Inge, Nate Robertson, Mike Maroth were on that team.

Leyland may be "old school" but he's not an idiot.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

Plus, those kids of Detroit
just beat the big, bad New York Yankees.

by Salvatore on Oct 8, 2006 9:12 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

dude!
first of all i never said they shouldnt celebrate.  They should, they advanced to the next round.  i also never called leyland an idiot.  He obviously isnt.

The point i was trying to make is the fact that they were celebrating like they just won it all.  If they want to party like they won it all so be it.  Look at all the other clubs that have advanced so far and the celebrations are much more tame.  Yes, they do celebrate but they also realize that there is much left.

If the Tigers get bounced in the next round then who cares that they beat the Yanks.  I mean its nice and all but isnt the goal to win the world series, not beat the Yankees?

If they do win it all the only way they can top that celebration against the yankees is to start making out and fornicating with each other on the field.

they have a long way to go still.

by thefosseposse on Oct 8, 2006 11:17 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I said Leyland's not an idiot
because what reason is there not to celebrate? It isn't going to affect how they play against the A's. And Leyland for all his reputation as "old school" is a "players' manager".

Yes, the ultimate goal is winning the title; but you can take that goal too far. Look at the Yankees. For them, and their fans, winning is demanded, not enjoyed, victory brings no pleasure, merely relief.

Who cares if they beat the Yankees, but don't win the WS? Brandon Inge cares. Nate Robertson cares. Their fans care.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Oct 8, 2006 11:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

ummmmmmmm
look i'm not denying the fact that the Tigers had a great season after years of being dreadful.  their team is a great story.

and of course they care if they beat the yanks.  All the A's cared if they beat the twins, but man if the a's beat the twins and dont get any further, well that sucks.  A great season is a great season but i never want to see my team get knocked out.

chavez said it best in that if the a's get bounced in the next round then it would hurt worse then the other playoff exits.  the a's have a mission.  The tigers on the other hand seem to be happy to be there and to have beaten the Yanks.  I get the impression from the media that everyone is ready to crown the AL title to detroit cause they knocked out the yanks.  And i get the impression that the tigers feel like they have the title after knocking them out too.

I'll still look back on this season as being great and loving the three game sweep of the twins, but i still have higher hopes and i'm sure the a's players do too.

If beating the yanks in a division series is cause to celebrate like youv'e won it all then go ape shit after winning the wild card too.  hell its detroit, go ahead and start a riot after being the mariners in a 3 game series during the regular season!

by thefosseposse on Oct 8, 2006 5:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

But Detroit did go ape-shit after qualifying
for the playoffs. As did the Twins.
hell its detroit, go ahead and start a riot after being the mariners in a 3 game series during the regular season!

You're so funny.

Every team that gets into the postseason "has a mission". The Yankees have a "mission" every freaking year. As did the Braves in the 90's. Lots of good that did.

Have the Tigers' players or manager said ANYTHING that would indicate that they think that they have the title after knocking out the Yankees?

By your argument, an athlete who "only" wins silver or bronze at the olympics sucks.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

But consider this
The last time the Tigers fans had seen their team, they lost horribly to lose the division, while instead of home games, they had to go to New York to face the Big, Bad Yankees.

No one gave them a chance, including me. I'll say that had every right to be that excited over the win.

"I have an owie; can I go to first?" ~louismg on Vlad

by baseballgirl on Oct 8, 2006 2:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

okay
fine, be excited over the win, of course be excited, enjoy it.  but when is the last time a team has celebrated like madmen in a FIRST ROUND series that didnt have a dramatic game winning hit.  I['m not saying detroit should sit on their hands and not cheer.  I'm not saying that the players shouldnt pop the cork on the champagne.  But there is something to be said to celebrate like you expected to win, even if nobody else thought you could.

I would honestly say the A's beating the twins in 3 is a bigger upset then the Tigers beating the Yanks.  Sure the Yanks lineup is scary, but their starters are average at best.  I think the Twins lineup has some scary bats and a better pitching staff then the yanks.  The Twins were the HOTTEST team in the AL and had to have a feeling of destiny after overcoming the Tigers to win the central

However, the A's still expected to beat them and they partied and celebrated like it.

bbtn crew
last night when i got home, i flipped on sportscenter.  the bbtn crew was going through their predictions for the alcs.  all three "analysts" (and i use the term loosely) picked the tigers to beat the a's.  kruk then said, i guess we'll see you guys in oakland for the world series.  yes, you will bi-yatch.

by inbillywetrust on Oct 8, 2006 8:50 AM PDT   0 recs

Kruk's Battle
When Kruk was asked his prediction, did you see and hear his hesitation?  "uhhhhhhh . . . Tigers."  The surprise of what the A's did (fairly recently) v. his Twins was certainly registering somewhere in his brain.  But then market-think slapped him sideways and he fell in line.  "Yesssssss, DRILL SERGEANTTTTTT, Private Kruk reporrrrrrrrrrrting!"

Matier and Ross
Are generally reliable for San Francisco City Hall politics.  The farther away their sources get from the vicinity of Van Ness and Grove, the less I'd bet on it.  Not saying that the move to Fremont isn't quite likely to happen, but I didn't see any actual new news in their piece -- I think they just wanted a headline with the A's in it.

their quote was from Scott Haggerty - doesn't he rep the Fremont area of southern Alamdeda County?

It was a great day for an A's lead.  But, if Wolff and Fischer are committing dollars to buy up property surrounding the Cisco plot....that does say something.

by OaklandSi on Oct 8, 2006 4:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The story also said...
...that they're buying property quietly, in hopes of avoiding a situation in which sellers hold out for more money based on the planned development.  Of course the M&R column undermines their ability to keep things quiet, possibly driving up the price of the land they hope to develop.  One almost wonders if the reporting of the story decreases the odds of building a Fremont ballpark.

I am so excited
I cannot wait for this series to start. The A's can get passed the Tigers, dispite most people picking the Tigers to win.

What do you guys seriously think about this matchup? Who is going to win and why? And would it really bother you if the Tigers won? Can we, as fans, be ok (not like, but be ok) with the A's losing now?

For me, it boils down to pitching, even more so for this series. Can the A's shut down MoTown's hitters as well as they did the Twinks? Or are the Tigers going to carry their momentum into this?

The A's do have to outpitch the Tigers. They need to show they can beat Rogers, as they did Santana. They HAVE to take advantage of of ANY mistakes, because runs could be very hard to get for the A's. That means, not many LOB! And at least we don't ahve to worry about the dome affecting fly balls now  :)

In other words, do what they did to get to the playoffs and what they perfected against the Twins.

What say you?

PS. I'm happy the A's are coming to Fremont. I live near there  =)  Nothing like being able to go to a game then Claim jumper for dinner  woohoo

Take it from a lifelong Cubs fan, it's much more fun to root for a losing team. The Phillies had the all-time curse, zero world championships for their first 79 years. A friend of mine who's a Phillies fan told me it took several years after their world championship to care as much again.

Here's the thing
I'm going to be in trouble if the A's happen to beat the Tigers because I'm going to visit family in Connecticut the last week of October.

This is an annual trip I take and usually it's right around Halloween.  Years past it hasn't mattered...even when the A's were making the playoffs.  Yet I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to bite me in the A this year.

Happy Birthday, BBG!!!  I'm hoping the A's give you a WONDERFUL birthday present this year.

no DLD yet?
first beane compared the a's to the ramones, then menudo, and now INXS:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/10/08/SPGATLL6TB1.DTL&type=a s

Beane said the A's are still trying to decide whether to add Keith Ginter, Mark Kiger or Kevin Melillo to the ALCS roster, taking the spot of the injured Mark Ellis. Kiger will join the team for a workout at the Coliseum today and then return to Arizona while Ginter will play in an instructional league game in Phoenix. Whoever joins the team likely will do so Tuesday, flying in the day of Game 1. "It's like a reality TV show," Beane said. "Like audition to be the lead singer of INXS, audition to be a utility infielder."

Never heard of these guys
except for Ginter. To beat a dead horse again, It sure would have been nice to see Mr. Crosby pull off an amazing miracle playing second. If he's that bad,  then his whole career might be in jepoardy.

by Salvatore on Oct 8, 2006 10:30 AM PDT   0 recs

At least Crosby's a plus on defense
and we know he has some pop in his bat when he's able to make some contact. Plus, I noticed that he's one of the few guys on the team that actualy excells at bunting. With shortstop being such a physically demanding position, maybe Croz is no longer an the everyday shortstop the A's hoped for. If that's the case, look for him to play second for the A's or some other team. Other added possibilities are the outfield, first and third--maybe Crosby can end up being a valuable utility guy. It's all up to Croz, now, or it's all in God's hands. You'd hate to see a good, hardwording young guy who achieved Rookie honors have these kind of seriouis health issues.

by Salvatore on Oct 9, 2006 9:30 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There are a couple of...
things wrong with your post.  1.  He achieved rookies honors in much the same way that Street did: little in the way of competition. 2. There are two guys at second I would take before Crosby, Ellis and (yup) Scoot. (Croz is too well paid to be the 2nd base equivelent of either) 3.  When did it become important for an A's player to bunt, and how did you come to that conclusion?  By seeing Crosby and 2 other guys bunt in two years?  4. Outfield, first or third????  Maybe he can pitch cause we can't get much deeper at those spots.  We need a soild defensive shortstop (like Croz) than isn't a whimp (infielders should be more durable) and can hit CONSISTENTLY.  Shortstops with bats have almost become comodities in the Majors.  We can pick one up on our budget, one that won't be on the DL every time he breaks a nail.

Felt the same thing when the Gambler
was spraying shampoon on those Michiganders: I hate the man violently, yet I was totally happy for him and thought that was a cool way to thank the fans. As for overcelebration, well it's the last series is winning this year, so they did right to get all goofy over it.

I totally disagree on Ginter
When you have a chance to go to the World Series, and you are able to slightly increase your chances at this stage of the race you take it.
Ginter has several years of major league experience, and if we go to the World Series we need more pinch hitters than we do in the American League. We are already paying about $62 million this year, and more importantly the breaks line up for us, we have home field advantage agianst the Tigers and in the NL, the NL is weak. When you have a chance to go for the brass ring, you MUST take the chance, Ginter is our best shot in the 25th spot on the roster, and can be had for a reasonable price, if he looks better than the other guys in Arizona, a minimum salary shouldn't be the issue.
Beane can always bundle him in a trade this offseason.

Agreed.
Gotta go with the experience in this situation for a 'just in case' moment. Ginter is our best shot. The team needs him, he would probably love a chance to be on a postseason roster, there's no reason that they can't put a cheap-and-dirty deal together, release him after it all and let him go on his merry way to a new team that has a use for him.

Gotta go with the Hazy Shades of Ginter this time.

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

i would agree
if

1) ginter was even average defensively at second base.  he was lousy with the a's in 2005, and made 15 errors this year with the rivercats.

or

2) ginter was a better hitter than jimenez.  ginter had a few good months, but finished the season with a .268 avg and .799 ops, pretty mediocre for sacto.  jimenez had a .304 avg and .893 ops (only 125 at bats).

i would go with the best defensive option as the backup infielder, and i'm 99.9% certain that's not ginter.

I am October baby too
I would LOVE to be attending a game on my birthday - October 22nd - day 2 of the World Series.  And I would love for my baseball buddy and I to not only celebrate our birthdays (hers is the 27th) but an A's win-it-all the day before (and I do not care if they clinch away).  Oh what a happy, happy day that would be!
Baseball is life. . . at least that is what my sweatshirt says.

BBG....U rock!
Fantastic diary ...sweet last sentence.

I can't remember when I saw a more intensely emotional press conference than Rogers' post-gamer.  He touched me then, and he touched me more when he sprayed the champagne.

Now kick his ass, bitches!

I'm not an Oct baby
But I'm an A's fan....so I'm okay right?
By the way....BBG is almost 30?! NO WAY!! You look GREAT!!!!! Enjoy the cruise! And I second that whole "Don't drink the water" thing

Fans gettin' some love at LL
Random thought
But the "Marco! Scutaro!" chant yesterday made me really, really jealous of the A's. Why can't we have stuff like that at Safeco?

A's birthdays
I'm turning 27 on the 11th. The only game I remember was 2001 when the A's took a 2-0 lead on the Yankees. Hudson pitched like 8 shutout innings.

Of course, they tanked the rest of the series, but we won't discuss that now.

Happy birthday BBG!
And thanks for stopping by and celebrating with us on Friday!!!  Will we see you on Tuesday?

by high street on Oct 8, 2006 1:13 PM PDT   0 recs

Whoa.
My birthday's October 14th too.  I haven't had to put that much thought about what I'll be doing around a certain date in the postseason after the ALDS for a long while.  Gee, since you put it that way..  <looks at calendar>  Hell, I don't care what's there, our boys are playing baseball in October!
