Where Was This Team Back In April, May, June, and July?!
I never thought I’d be typing this in the 2007 season, but this team has been flat-out fun this week. It’s amazing what a little offense can do, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we would have been better served to have traded some of those spectacular pitching gems earlier in the season for a little more pop at the plate. Or Kendall for Suzuki earlier; either way.
Today’s pitching performance wasn’t spectacular; it wasn’t even particularly pretty. Haren threw what felt like a million pitches through six, his defense let him down to boot, and when was all said and done, he headed for the showers, racking up yet another ND. But unlike the rest of the season, that was a mere footnote in the game, instead of the headline story. The A’s offense refused to roll over and die, despite leaving their customary runner at third with zero outs. The only thing particularly noteworthy about that occurrence was that the runner on third was Mike Piazza, on base via a triple, the first of three hits in his bid for the cycle today.
Today was a story of redemption: Hannahan, who couldn’t quite replicate Chavez at third, managed to make up for it at the plate, driving in his first run after a tremendous at-bat to start the scoring for the A’s after the White Sox had opened up a 3-0 lead; Ellis, who popped up every pitch he saw until the game-winning one-out triple in the tenth; Swisher, who just missed catching a foul ball last night, made a huge catch in foul territory today to end the inning, leaving White Sox all over the bases; and Suzuki, who has been compared negatively (unfairly) to Jason Kendall behind the plate, not only drove in the A’s second run, but hit the game-winning, walk-off three run homerun (his second in less than 24 hours) to send the A’s to the win; and to the sweep. Kendall would not have done that.
Lost in the all the fun was a solo homerun by Shannon Stewart to tie the game, an incredible pitching performance by Andrew Brown, <gulp> scoreless innings by Embree and Lugo, and Geren taking on Ozzie toe-to-toe, and emerging victorious. I liked Geren taking the pressure off Hannahan by pinch-hitting Murphy, and I would like Billy Beane to note that no one, not ever would have pinch-hit Crosby. I’m just sayin’.
In case you have missed it, with dramatic fun and flair, the A’s have managed to put their rookies into some semblance of a real team, and have won four in a row, 11 of 16, and are now two games under .500. I think the adage ‘too little too late’ might still apply, but somehow when I wasn’t looking, this team became watchable again.
And the rookie parade just keeps on coming. Dan Meyer (yes, really!) starts his first game as an Athletic tomorrow night against Kansas City at 7:05, as the A’s go for 5 in a row; hopefully on the way to twenty.
LET’S GO OAK-LAND!

Believe it or not...
when I type "LOL", whatever I'm LOLling to actually did make me laugh out loud (or, if at work, I at least made a little stifled <snerk> noise that would have been out-loud laughter if I hadn't been at work).
I haven't yet figured out how to literally LMAO, unfortunately, but I will keep working on that one.

Nice write up, BBG!
I love this team! Get rid of Crosby, Kotsay and DJ and let's begin a new era of youngness! Go Dan Meyer!

... Chavez, Crosby, and Kendall and with Scutaro and Kotsay having drastically reduced roles.

If Chavvy ever gets healthy enough again
to play 140 games, hit .265 with 25 dingers and stellar defense, I'd be glad to have him back at the hot corner.
I'm falling in love with Donnie Murphy... not enough to wear a silk negligee for him or anything, but enough to post comments like "I'd trade Bobby Crosby and $5 million dollars to any club that will have him for a bucket of balls and a bloody sock!"
Hannahan is impressing me too. If I had my druthers, I'd see Chavvy at 3rd, Murphy at short, Ellis at 2nd, and Hannahan and Scutaro as the backups. However, Ellis and Scutaro won't exactly be cheap next season, either. We'll see.

Gid rid of Chavez
He's a great defensive player, but sucks at the plate, cannot stay healthy, and is not able to lead/carry the team which is something mgmt expected when they paid him all those bucks. He's becoming a second reincarnation of Jason Kendall.
The A's are going to be strapped with his contract as well as the contracts of Loaiza and Kotsay for the next few years.

But there are gradations.
If Chavy can get back to being a great fielding .260 hitting, 20 HR / 80 RBI guy, he'll be better than anything else we're barfing up there these days. Though I like Han-Candy, but I'm not so sure about his range at 3B.

That's *Minnesotan* Han-Candy
Yeah, I agree -- if Chavez can somehow recuperate his back and his shoulder and his forearms, and he can be slotted into the bottom third of the lineup (requiring 6 better hitters on the roster, plus Beane/Geren's willingness to bat him that low), I'd love to see him back in the lineup.

Even last season, Chavy played enough
and was healthy enough to hit 22 HR, 24 doubles, and drive in 72 runs--and he was NOT very healthy. It's not such a stretch to think he could regain just a little more health than he had in 2006, and that would translate to numbers worthy of the 6-hole behind Buck, Barton, Swisher, Cust, and one other.

Let's just hope . . .
that he doesn't need the same surgery that Kotsay needed.
Because that's done wonders for his OPS.

Back surgery is a big deal
I'd give Kotsay a whole year to recover before deciding if he can still play.
Chavez' injuries are worrisome since he's position is not as high impact on his body as Kotsay's, and he's not getting injured on freak plays like Crosby, he just gets hurt, doing nothing out of normal baseball. I don't have confidence that he can suddenly get healthy.

agreed, but ...
... Chavvy's OPS and health have been on a downward trend for a while now. I think it's wildly unrealistic to expect him to be able to reverse that. I think best-case scenario for Chavez is to plateau at his '07 production level.

I think that's a bit cynical...

I'm not quite ready to say that--
Han-Man has done a nice job so far, but he's played all of 3 games, he hasn't proven range or error-free fielding, and offensively the sample is just too small and hardly "brilliant". Cautiously optimistic is as far as I'm willing to go, and I'm not ready yet to say he precludes there being a "big deal" issue at 3B.

So you don't think
Not only a great game, but for those in "listening range" I thought this was a truly outstanding broadcast, from Ken's calls of Piazza's triple to Stewart's catch and subsequent madness to Swisher's catch to solid calls by Vince on Stewart's HR, Ellis' triple and Suzuki's HR. Good stuff. Sounds like one of the best games of the season.

Kenko is awesome.
When I'm at the game I always root for the A's to score in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th so I can fully enjoy the highlight package at the end.
However, I shall never forgive him for making me listen to Vince/Bitker for that exciting win over the Giants on a drive to Tahoe because he had to attend some event at the ""Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame."" (Yes, that's double scare quotes.)

I agree BBG
it is fun watching the A's again. If Kotsay were to do something good, I would just yawn, but when a young unproven player does something good then it is exciting. It is so much fun watching a Murphy, Suzuki or Hannahan in their taste of the majors.
It is not the time to say anything about Scutaro, we all love him but the reality is that if Murphy were playing short today, the A's would have turned two DP's they didn't turn, one because Scutaro has a weak arm, and slow on the delivery, the other on the throw in from Stewart. I trust Murphy's rocket arm over Scutaro's in both those cases.
Nevertheless a real fun game, and exciting to watch, now I will be glued to the TV tomorrow night to see what Meyer does, I don't expect much, assume he will be all nerves, but nevertheless, a fun time.

Are you counting 2-seam and 4-seam fastballs or something? Fastball, slider, change is what I have him pegged at. Maybe I'm missing one. I'm convinced the mythical "screwball" is actually his changeup, which fades violently down and away from righties.

sure...
just don't tell him that Kendall sucks, because he's a great pitch caller and handler of a staff.
I'm not wishing to have him back or anything... but he's a fine catcher, and I hope he has a few more productive years in the NL, and maybe gets another chance to beat the shit out of John Lackey in an interleague game.
